Madden 09: Nit Picking Quarterback Ratings

Tags: , ,

Madden 09 coverSportsgamer has released some Madden 09 quarterback ratings to help feed the offseason hunger for anything football. For the most part, everything looks pretty reasonable, but a lot of little things about these ratings are getting under my skin, so I’m going to use this opportunity to vent my frustrations. This is a warning: If you don’t like football, then you might want to stop reading now.

As a Miami Dolphins fan, my eyes immediately fell to Josh McCown. He has an overall rating of 79, which seems fair, judging by his struggles in Oakland last season. However, one stat boggled my mind; McCown has a speed rating of 79, meaning that of the 32 starting quarterbacks, he is supposedly the third fastest. However, during the course of his career, he has run the ball an average of only 13 yards per game. The next thing that caught my eye was Vince Young’s 88 overall rating. Last season, Young managed to throw only 9 touchdowns to 17 interceptions, but he was given an accuracy rating of 84. Another player who is way over rated is Marc Bulger. He has been given a rating of 89, despite a 70.3 quarterback rating last season. He did have to battle through injuries and a devastated offensive line, but that doesn’t completely account for his below average 199 yards per game and an 11/15 touchdown to interception ratio. The last thing I’ll let myself ramble on about is Eli Manning’s stats. I’m not totally sure why, but I’ve always really liked Eli Manning, and I’ve almost always found myself cheering for him. However, even I don’t think his Super Bowl win warrants a 93 overall rating. The younger Manning completed a measly 56% of his passes, and threw only three more touchdowns than interceptions during the regular season. He was fantastic during the playoffs, but in no way has he vaulted into elite QB status.

Madden NFL 09 is expected out on August 12. I hope that’s enough time for developers to clean up some of those stats.

Just to touch on McCown’s speed rating, it doesn’t necessarily have to reflect how often he runs the ball, speed also has to do with scrambling, and playing behind to terrible O-lines in Detroit and Oakland, I’m sure McCown can scramble a little bit.

Also to add, in the 06 season, Peyton had the second most rushing TD’s by a QB, and he certainly will not have a high speed rating, even though he runs for TD’s sometimes.

I guess my point is that, if he truly was the 3rd fastest starting QB in the league, he’d use this god given ability a little bit more, and maybe put up some decent numbers in that category.

it would be more alarming if they’d rated him higher than 79. i mean, yeah it’s a little high for a quarterback who hasn’t really ever shown us true speed, but it’s not really a “high” rating. it’s a solid rating, but it’s not saying he’s the flash.
