EndWar: Best thing for RTS games since… uh, when did the first one come out?
“Calling all tanks, attack hostile 2!”
“Unit 3, Capture Bravo!”
“Special task force, capture hostile 4 and torture them for the rest of Red Team’s battle plan!”
Oh wait, that last one didn’t work. I guess Tom Clancy isn’t the biggest supporter of the Bush administration (for the record: according to Wikipedia, he isn’t).
Tom Clancy’s EndWar is the next big thing on the real-time strategy front. It’s incorporating a vocal command system, which according to Gamespot, is working extremely well. This new dimension will help to spice up an arguably stagnant genre. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve never been a hardcore RTS gamer, but I have been a casual fan who has always enjoyed the likes of Red Alert and Starcraft. To me – and to probably a lot of others like me – the small graphical upgrades and occasional changes in scenery have been getting old for a while now. Being able to bark orders at your loyal squad is a very attractive quirk. In an effort to make game play smoother, Ubisoft has also taken out many features most current-gen RTS’s would normally employ. It has yet to be seen if this will hurt the replay value significantly.
Multiplayer is also going to be getting a nice big twist with an immersive World War 3 experience. Everyone will be fighting with their friends to move the front lines back and forth over the entire planet. If nobody can wait until roughly September of this year (depending on whether or not you can ever trust Ubisoft to stick to a release date), check out Shattered Galaxy, which is a free MMO-RTS that’s pretty fun.
