DLC - It’s a Good Thing

With all of the consoles out in the market hitting their strides we should hopefully be seeing some downloadable content released for flagship titles. On March 10th Mass Effect DLC will be available. The content promises roughly 90 minutes of extra gameplay and 50 gamer points for achievement whores such as myself. It’s baffling that other developers aren’t more serious about this approach.

Music video games should be in the forefront in this field. Rock band gets this. They have sold over 3 million songs and have 100+ to download with more coming. Guitar Hero has…9? They are electing to release another title within the year. Why?

There is no reason to release another title, just put each song up for purchase online. You will make money. So instead of rushing a new title and guitar controller out, sit back, develop a great game. Try and compete!

With a new set of next-next-gen consoles very far off and the limits of the consoles being stretched, it makes sense for developers to take this approach. Personally, I would like to download extra levels every month or so instead of having to wait 2 to 3 years to play another title. I don’t think that they should stop releasing entire games, that would be dumb. Just keep the excitement fresh and put effort into keeping your customers happy.

Thanks Bioware, I hope you release more levels for me to play.
